How do you use 'for want of a better word' ?

Does it go before or after the word that you want a better word for? ... if that makes sense.

    you could use it before or after, use it before if you know the word you are going to use is pretty naff, or use it after if you realise after you have said it that it wasnt a great word to use.

    for want of a better word ?, it sounds good ,but,

    to use 'you' is necessary of course in : (do) you want a better word for?
