what to do in Houston alone?

I will be coming from Europe to Houston to work in September. I am not yet sure, but think I will be living in the Spring area or fairly close to Bush Int. Airport. I will be working, but will also try to experience Houston and Texas. What could be fun to do alone, and where could I get to know new people?

Also I thought about traveling a week or two before I start working so that i can get an idea of the area I will be living in and work, but want to make time for some vacation time. Where could be fun to go?

I am over 40, and when it comes to going out at night, I like places with live music. Anyone with experience and good ideas?

Thanks

everything is going to be at least a 30 minute drive form where you will be staying.

I would definitely recommend all the museums in our museum district : Science, Fine Arts, Holocaust

The Zoo is also a sight

    for shopping visit the Galleria

for dining visit the Montrose, Galleria, or Downtown areas

and for live music, you will want to be downtown Thursday - Saturday

i.e. House of Blues , Sambuccas

Houston is full of museums; art, science, all the way to the abnormal like the funeral museum.

Zoo, lots of theaters, butterfly museum, professional sports, jogging trails, world class shopping, NASA, the beaches at Galveston, historic home tours, festivals, etc.

Don't live close to Bush. Head north of FM 1960 for safety reasons.

Well in houston if you like shopping then you should check out the galleria which is the number one tourist attraction in the city and it is in the Uptown Park section of Houston
