Beau Scott apparent "automatic selection"...WHY?
I was re-reading the Sunday Herald this afternoon, and something odd caught my eye- An automatic assumption that Beau Scott would pair up with Creagh in the 2nd Row. Considering how useless Scott was on the Wing for NSW last year, why would anything even be considering his spot in Origin, yet alone guaranteeing it?
Almost makes me stop reading the Herald, if it weren't for the fact that the Telegraph is worse.

Yeah there are some players that are consider auto selctions despite being average players like bird, gallen, pearce I think that ppl tend to base their opinion on good players on what other people think are good players ppl commenators mainly, I mean if ppl here commenatators say he should be in origin then ppl assume he is better than the rest of the players in the country at that position

labelling him an 'automatic selection' is a extremely unfair as though he has a good chance of making the squad, he along with many others are still a weekend away from selection. The only 'automatic selections' would be the #3 - Gasnier, #12 - Creagh, #13 Gallen. All the other positions are still up for grabs.
I feel that Scott's result will depend on whether Lewis is able to play Origin, If he does, then he'll fight it out with bird for a bench spot but if lewis doesn't then his chances are much greater..

The paper wrote that he was an automatic selection for Origin because he was named as 18th man for Australia. In reality, we know that Test selection does not guarantee Origin selection.
The NSW backrow is Lewis, Bird and Gallen with Watmough off the bench. Beyond that, it's largely down to opinion.

He's far from an automatic selection. I will actually be extremely disappointed if even gets selected at all. Creagh, Lewis, Bird, Gallen, Watmough, Hindmarsh and even guys like Stewart, Houston or Heighington would be much better choices for the backrow in my opinion. He's a solid defender and he does a great job for the Dragons but thats where it ends, I really hope the selectors give him a pass this year.

I don't think he should be an automatic selection, no way. But I do think he is playing well in the backrow for the Dragons and I wouldn't be against him grabbing a bench spot. He's very tough, hits the line hard and is a great defender. As long as we play him in the backrow and not in the centres I'll be happy.

Actually, Scott played in the centre for NSW last year, not on the wing.
Also the article said he would be selected with Greg bird in the back row.

He's a decent player but nowhere near an automatic selection I would have thought. But they're probably just talking out of their a**e as usual. I have no faith in supposedly concrete statements. There has been so many of them of late that have turned out to be crap.

He's not a bad footballer but no way would I have him pencilled in as an "automatic selection". There are better forwards running around than him and better backs.

These are selectors that name Gidley on the bench as captain. So why do you find this surprising?
