Hard starting and check engine light intermittent on 99 Road King Classic?
I have a 99 Road King Classic with 27K miles (purchased recently). When I got it 4K miles ago, it started and idled normally but occasionally the check engine light would come on. Took it to Harley who checked it and said there were not faults in memory. Cleared the light and sent me away. 2 days later, the same problem showed up.
Now, I am having issues with it starting when cold or warm. The idle has dropped to 600 - 650 rpm and when I downshift, I get a substantial amount of backfiring. I have changed the plugs to iridium plugs, cleaned the K&N filter, and checked everything I can. The check engine light is still on occasionally. I have noticed that I will get about 38 MPG with the check engine light on and 45 MPG with it off. When it is on, I can smell fuel like I am running rich.
My only option left is to take it to the Harley house to have it (1) re-flashed, (2) diagnosed, and/or (3) repaired. I hesitate only due to the ridiculous mark up the Harley house puts on any repair.
Any suggestions on possible issues. Please don't tell me to sell it and purchase a different brand. I have owned Harleys for the past 50 years and they are what I ride.
Appreciate any help.
The 99 Road King Classic is indeed fuel injected. It is the first year of the 1450cc FI VTwin 88.

EDIT AGAIN...Long involved phone call with the shop that put on the Stage 1 kit. The Magnetti-Marelli FI needs to have hot/cold idle adjusted once every year or every other year. Local house is going to chage $200 for the job. Have checked it for an intake leak....sprayed carb cleaner everywhere and it make no change....so unless something has changed on these engines in the last 40 years, that tends to be a pretty good test for leaks. Appreciate all inputs so far...

The first fuel injection on Harley's was made by Magneti-Marelli and wasn't a very good system. They were plagued with problems.Poor idle was one of the worst things. You need to find a mechanic familiar with the M-M injection system. Also has it been checked for an intake leak?

If it is indeed an injected model (as a re-flash is only for injected bikes) then it's probably a computer problem. Could be real hard to find on your own and all Harley will do is start replacing parts (starting with the computer at great expense, I would imagine).
If you can test the computer parts on your own you might save a ton.
If it's a carb model, rebuilding the carb (relatively cheap) would probably do it...

I vote for the mass air flow sensor it tells the engine how a lot air the engine is taking in. If it thinks the quantity of air unexpectedly adjustments the computing device adjustments the quantity of gas it injects to verify. it is likewise a extreme failure merchandise. i could take it to a pair the place that would verify the code for you. The sensor is interior the tube between the air clear out and the engine, you may desire to un plug it and see what happens some engines will unquestionably run particularly nicely whilst in comparison with a bad sensor.

stay away from the dealership and find a good independent shop to re flash it.
