We have a young family and stayed at the Ocean Coral & Turquesa All-Inclusive Resort in Puerto Morelos not too long ago. We really enjoyed the place and found it to be very family friendly. They had activities, good pools and we even made use of the babysitting one night to go out just the two of us to a nice restaurant on the strip in Cancún. (The babysitting was extra but not unreasonable.) All-in-all, we really enjoyed the place.

We also enjoyed Puerto Morelos as a get away for the family. It's close to the Cancún airport. (The first town you hit when you head south.) But not too far from the strip in Cancún and an easy day trip from Chichen Iztá. These were two places we wanted to visit on our trip. Our two kids are your son's age and really got into the Mayan pyramids. Also, we enjoyed the nice little plaza in the center of Puerto Morelos. I've found Puerto Morelos to be the least touristy of all the Mayan Riviera towns. An aspect which which we enjoyed.
