Parenting teens question?

My 17 year old daughter says she is grown and doesnt have to abide by her mothers rules. She skips school and her mother cannot legally make our daughter come home according to police. How is the parent still held liable to the school if there is no way to make a 17 year old follow the rules? The mother faces punishment if the daughter misses school. This is in the state of Georgia. Our daughter lives or is supposed to live with her mother.

Liability to the school is a separate legal issue from not being able to force her to go home. Tough love may be the best way to go - stop providing access to cash, cell phones, cars, etc. and make your daughter earn luxuries by complying with house rules (attending school, curfew, etc). If she refuses, withdraw her from school as a drop-out and stop providing for her - don't allow her to come and go as she pleases, take her house key (or change the locks) so that she has to knock on the door and ask to be let in. Remove all of her possessions from her room, except for a few bare necessities, and don't give her tv or computer privileges, even if it means hiding them from her. If she doesn't like it, she can either learn to follow some rules or learn to support herself. She may change her mind once she gets a taste of the harsh reality of the real world.

Screw it. She'll be 18 soon. Just let her do what she wants. On her 18th birthday kick her out.
