The 1960 Presidential election was the first election where debates were televised. Previously, the debates broadcast over radio. Since they were televised, the presidential candidate had to look appealing. This gave Kennedy a significant advantage over Nixon. Interestingly, people who saw the debates thought JFK performed better while those listening felt that Nixon was the better debated.
During the 1968 Presidential election there were large-scale riots outside of the Democratic National Convention, which were well-covered by media outlets. This made the Democratic Party look disorganized, swaying the election toward the GOP.
Moreover, the president needs to make frequent media appearances, always seeming upbeat and personable, because everyday is well covered.
