Sure it seems a little cliche', but I recommend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series. Also, I recommend Hercule Poirot, written by Agatha Christie. They are two of the most well-known mystery characters and detectives, and it's not for no reason.

James Patterson is a great author if your looking for suspense and mystery they always keep you wanting to know more
