In layman's terms, get on an ISO 9001 course from a company like LRQA. You will need to know a lot and they are industry recognised. Get your companies processes documented. You will need to get auditors in, and they will give you a list of non-compliances for you to fix. It isn't so much a pass/fail as a "working towards 100% compliance".

I don't know where your company is, what it does (produces) or how big it is.
It would pay you to read this first http://www.iso-9000-certification.org.uk/
If you are a small company (about 20 or less) it is possible that BS-EN-ISO 9001:2008 SME is what you need. (SME = Small and Medium Size Enterprises.)
If I can assist you further pls send me an email through Yahoo Answers giving me your full email address and if you are in UK, a number I can call you on.
You will need a bit of expert advice to avoid wasting effort going in the wrong direction
