Snail floating on top with body hanging out and Ick Tablets?
I have 4 platys and one neon fish and 2 snails (not sure what kind). The fish all recently got Ick, so i went to petsmart and the "fish guy" told me to give them ice tablets for 5 days and that it wouldn't harm my snails. Well i have 2 days left on the Ick tablet dosage and now one of my snails has been floating on top of the tank since yesterday. He was moving around last night a bit, but now he is just floating up there with his body hanging out a bit.
Is it dead??
and did the Ick tablets cause this?
Thanks for all you answers, i moved it and now its trap door is closed and itsjust floating around the water..i think its dead.

If it's not dead, it's probably on it's way. Virtually all ick medications are either copper-based or malachite green-based, both of which are deadly towards invertebrates, including snails.

Most medications will killl snails and many will kill the good bacteria in your system. Take the snail out and put him in a seperate container but he still might not make it. Don't add any more fish or snails for a month or two to give the tank a chance to recover.
A good way to not get ich in your tank is to set up a small quarantine tank and put any new fish in that tank for 6-8 weeks. If the new fish has ich you can treat your quarantine tank without damaging your main tank.

The person above me is right. take the snail out and smell it..if it is dead it will smell horrible....sometimes snails will float on top of the water. You should take the snail out of the tank until you are done with the ick tablets.

Most medication for tanks will kill snails and shrimp. Take it out of the water and gently pull on its "trap door" and if it closes it then it's dead. You can also smell it. If it is alive I would tank it out of the tank and place it in a bowl of water and change out the water everyday. Not guaranteeing it will work, but worth a try.
