In the past, a person was considered black if they had ANY African ancestry, even if they were mostly European. A person who had any known African ancestry was never accepted as being anything but black and was treated the same way as all other blacks. They weren't allowed to acknowledge their European ancestry. Therefore, many people who were half/part black just called themselves black.

Although that same racism isn't prominent anymore, half/part black people still have the tendency to identify themselves as black because that is the group with which they can most easily associate themselves. And to be honest, even though America has come a long way, even today a half black/half white person who called themselves white would never be accepted as white, whereas they would easily be accepted as black by blacks and everyone else. People don't necessarily do that because they are still racist or too race-conscious, but because that's the way it's always been and people don't really think twice about it. It's a habit, really, and old habits die hard. However, I think more and more mixed people are starting to identify themselves as mixed because they realize that they don't have to be one or the other anymore.

I should also note than in America, being black and mixed aren't mutually exclusive, since most black Americans aren't 100% African themselves. Therefore, Obama can accurately be described as black within the context of American society. This is why I said that in America, being black is more of a social label than a description of someone's race.
