Does this concept actually exist? Yes it exists but does not happen much at all. But entertainment is just that, Entertainment not fact or even coming close. In the first 4 seasons the TV show Criminal Minds caught at least twice as many serial killers as the real BSU estimates are active in the US. One of the more famous ones, back in the late 1940's, is William George Heirens called by the press The Lipstick Killer

The Halloween series, old are cool but the re makes by Rob Zombie rock, anything else by R.Z., if you haven't seen any of his other work, i feel it was better then the Halloween re-makes. Kane-See no Evil, is a real sick slasher, and Hostel 1 and 2 aren't really serial killers but good and gory. None of these however have the long tied together plot line like the Saw movies or the Hanibal series.(which i do like, there's nothing better then the ironic twists in the early Saw's)

Well, people already gave you names of slashers movies..... If you are interested in the whole "good serial killer" thing :
Angel (tv show)
Moonlight
(tv show- only 16 episodes were ever made, but all ends tied by episode 16, so it's like a miniseries).

I love it when tv shows do serial killer episodes! The pilot of NUMB3RS has a good one. The first season of The Mentalist is also about a creepy serial killer.
