Should Harold Camping return finances to those who invested in his May 21 Judgment Day ministry?

An open letter to Camping's website:

I watched your ministry's video on YouTube and read your tracts. You claim your faith is in the Bible. Can't help but ask, which part?

In Mark 13:31-33 Jesus says,

31Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

32But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

33Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

God is not mocked. He doesn't contradict Himself. So, if this ministry is biblically based, why did you choose to dismiss Jesus' direct words?

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it says,

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

James 14-21 says,

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,

16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?

17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

This all leads to the following challenge:

Will you seek God's mercy, find it in your heart to confess and repent of this falseness and do right by those who've been deceived...those who misplaced their devotion to this ministry? Will you find it the right thing to do by offering finances to them so they can get back on their feet?

And finally, will you do the right thing and step out from public ministry?

Update:

I have no part in that ministry. My heart goes out to those who've been deceived.

I believe God is no respecter of persons and that His mercy and grace can be extended to Harold Camping if he repented.

Zachias is such a man: a tax collector who took more than necessary from people and padded his pockets. Jesus stepped into his life and led him to repent and give back.

I pray the Holy Spirit will lead Harold Camping to repentance.

With respect to the comment about Noah and his family being a cult, I respectfully disagree. The beginning of Genesis 6 describes the condition of mankind and God saying it repented him of creating man. Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

That means Noah was the only one on earth worthy of saving.

Now, if you were to say there were 200 who were righteous and Noah's family the only ones saved, then I'd agree it'd be cultish. But that wasn't the case.

Mr. Camping's movement, however, falls under the definition of a cult because it separates

Update 2:

itself from the Body of Christ.

With respect to Christ coming as a thief in the night, the keyword is "as". Christ is not a thief.

1 Thes. 5:1-3 says

1But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

2 Peter 3:10 is another good description.

Basically, thiefs don't announce their arrival. If they did, we'd be prepared for them.

If we were able to know exactly when Christ would return, how would that change our lives? Would we be living for Him out of sincerity or fear?

Update 3:

Revelation 3:3 is written to one of the seven churches. It is not meant for the lost. The lost have not receved nor heard; so how can they obey and repent? Also, when Christ returns, it will be for us...not them. Read the verse again.

"Remember, therefore, what you have RECEIVED and HEARD; obey it, and repent. But if you DO NOT wake up, I WILL COME like a thief, and you WILL NOT know at what time I will come to you." (Revelation 3:3)

No, I think people should learn from their ignorance. Jesus specifically warned us about false prophets like this.

Your bible quotes are the very definition of tl;dr, but in the interest of answering, I'll just say that those fools and their money were parted, and they should have to live with their stupid decision. Just goes to show you that a lot of people take that book of bronze age myths too seriously, and you should run away as quickly as you can when someone starts spouting from it as if it's an authoritative source.

They were donations and all the money went to Family Radio, plus Mr. Camping is an old man with much more important things than money on his mind. Look at the Lamborghini he drives ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOdNOUu26Iw#t=45s ).

God displayed His powerful might by erupting Iceland's volcano on May 21, 2011, as a sign of sparing mankind thanks to Family Radio's ministry.

    Thank God!

Yes, we CAN know the date. Matthew 24:36 does not stand up to the rest of the Bible.

God has always warned mankind. God chose Harold Camping to warn mankind.

"Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he REVEALETH his secret unto his servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7)

"And [though] the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall SEE thy teachers" (Isaiah 30:20)

"Then opened he their understanding, that they might UNDERSTAND the scriptures" (Luke 24:45)

"Those who are wise will INSTRUCT many, THOUGH for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered." (Daniel 11:33)

Noah and his family were a cult minority. Did the world listen?

"By faith Noah, being WARNED of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith." (Hebrews 11:7)

"And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth [person], a PREACHER of RIGHTEOUSNESS, BRINGING IN the flood upon the world of the ungodly" (2 Peter 2:5)

Jesus doesn't come unexpectedly. Does a thief come to bring blessings?

"The thief cometh not, but for TO STEAL, and TO KILL, and TO DESTROY: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)

The ungodly are in view here.

"For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come ON THEM suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they WILL NOT escape." (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3)

"Remember, therefore, what you have RECEIVED and HEARD; obey it, and repent. But if you DO NOT wake up, I WILL COME like a thief, and you WILL NOT know at what time I will come to you." (Revelation 3:3)

All throughout the Bible man is warned.

"And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD HATH SENT US to destroy it." (Genesis 19:12-13)

"Jonah…cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." (Jonah 3:4)

"The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas…" (Matthew 12:41)

Nope. They shouldn't have been as stupid and gullible. Lesson well learned to everyone who actually believed that crap in my opinion.
