Has anyone experienced a family member naming their child something similar to your child's name?
My SIL is expecting and doesn't know the sex yet, but if it's a boy she has chosen Caden, which I find unfortunately close to my daughter Caitlin's name. It's my husband's brothers wife so they will have the same last name as we do. I'll keep my annoyance to myself, lol, and hope for a girl :)

I had a woman at work pick something kind of similar. My son's name is Jake James....she just had a boy and named him Jacob James Richard. Doesn't bother me though. If it was family, I'd probably be annoyed.

It can be annoying, but you can't really put 'dibs' on a name. My cousin and I were born less than one month apart. I was born before she was and when my mother told her only brother what they named me, he got all upset and told her she had stolen the name he had chosen. So, my cousin and I both have the same first name, but different middle names. It generally never caused a problem, just when referring to us everyone in the family called us by both our first and middle names to differentiate between the two of us. One of my brothers and one of my cousins have the same first name, same last name and same middle initial.
Its not an uncommon occurrence. Its not worth getting all twisted up about. In fact, I'd hope they don't have a girl because they just might like Caitlin as a name.

I'm due in about a week and we've decided on Owen for a name. My sister in law got all huffy because she says that's too close to a name that she and her boyfriend picked out for IF they ever have kids...they have picked out Ewen. She asked us not to use Owen because of that, but guess what...I'm pregnant with a boy NOW, and not in my imagination in a few year's time.
if she uses Ewen, I won't care, either, and I told her that she is free to use whatever name she likes. I also brought up the fact that she has two cousins both named Josh. She didn't like that!

I named my son Eian Micheal and like four months later my dad's cousin named his son Ian Michael... It still annoys me and they're 5 now. It absolutely grates on my nerves when we go to the annual family reunion and the cousin announces 'Look Ian, it's the 'other' Eian!' I KNOW it's totally unimportant, but...
I'm pregnant again and if it's a girl, we have chosen the name Annabelle. My friend is pregnant with a girl due 30 days before me, and she is talking about using Isabelle, which I don't like because they rhyme, but I know they wouldn't be together much anyway...

I don't really find the names that similar, other than you might hear one when someone yells out the other.
When I opened your question, I thought you were going to say the sames are as similar as "Mackenzie" and "Mackenna" or something. (That's what 2 cousins did on my husband's side. It's really anoying because everyone confuses them.)
So in your case, I wouldn't be bothered by it. They are two totally different names and only sound alike if you're out of earshot.

It really isn't a big deal. Besides, caden is not similar to caitlin. How do u know they didn't like caden long before u had ur daughter? I don't see a problem at all

I wanted to name one of our boys Nicholas, but my SIL (brothers wife) threw a huge fit because she already has a Nicholas. They even got huffy about Cole. I picked another name.

my middle name is Michelle and my aunt (who my mother hates) named her daughter Michelle. I really don't see why you would be annoyed with Caden and Caitlin. They don't even sound that much alike. They have the "kay" sound but that's it. It's just a name. Chill lady lol

Ugh, we experienced name stealing which was worse! My SIL and I were pregnant around the same time and when I said I liked either Nolan Lucas or Lucas Nolan for my son, she ended up naming her son who was born 5 months before mine, Nolan. Grrrrr.
