Um, evolution is a biological process, not a cosmological one.

Understanding evolution helps us understand our place in life and allows us to make predictions based on the relation between organisms. That seems to be quite relevant.

Creating an operating system would still require base-level programming so an understanding of the x86 architecture would be advantageous to Windows programmers. Since we know the origins of x86 architecture and have documentation for it, we don't need to research its origins and reverse engineer anything. We don't have a manual for reality. The mathematics equasions that describe the interaction of photons didn't come to us from the universe's inventor, it was determined through rigorous testing and repeated observation. If Windows 1.0 was 'God given' and came with no documentation I could understand the analogy, but it isn't.

Anyway the goal of evolutionists is not to create something better than what we have now, it's to better understand what we have now. It's like if Bill Gates died and willed you the source code to Windows. Windows 7 code is so complicated you can't understand it so you go back to Windows 1 to get a glimpse at the bare bones of the Windows system, then you work your way up from there.

Just by looking at anything you're looking into the past. Sure, in the ordinary experiences, this is hardly noticed. But in the scale of the galaxies and the universe itself, looking at distant things is seeing them as they were thousands, millions, or even billions of years ago.
