Hiya.
I started my daughter at 3 and she would do the same, so everytime she asked for a drink i would make her go to the potty for a wee first and within 5 minutes of her sitting there she had done her wee and gotten her drink. Give him alot of praise when he does use the potty and if he does wet him self leave him in his wet clothes for 5 minutes then clean him up and make him sit on the potty for a further 5 minutes.
Within a week my daughter was trained, but dont shout or tell him off for wetting as even after they are trained they tend to have the odd accident.

If you know he has control, you can move to putting cloth diapers on him at home or absorbent cloth underwear. Cloth will let him feel when he is wet much more than a regular diaper will do.
When he wets, stay very calm and matter-of-fact, "Oh, you are wet. Take off that underwear and toss in the washer. Here's a cloth, wipe up the wee on the floor." This will make it very not fun for him to wet as it means extra work.
Let him know, on the positive side, that when he is totally dry, you will get to have a particular toy or treat that he really likes.
Don't expect him to stay dry at night yet. Just put on a regular diaper then until he is staying dry at night consistently for at least a month.

around 3 or 4 is a good age. When he's 5 hes getting too old and is heading towards primary school.

I started around 2 years of age for my son and daughter. It took my son who is autistic a year to pee in the toilet and it took 4 exhausting years to teach him to poo in the toilet. My daughter learned in 4-5 months.
You need to give rewards for just sitting on the toilet for 10 minutes. You have to be firm and stay in the bathroom with him to get him used to being there.

I think 3 is a good age, but just know he won't grasp it immediately. It's been proven that boys learn slower than girls. If he doesn't learn by the time he is 4, you may need to ask a doctor for advice.

Maybe they're doing something different at playschool that works better for him. Ask them how they go about doing it.
