How much is a 3 bedroom house in your area ?

Hi, just curious, I live in Croydon, NSW Australia and to buy a nice (not even new) 3 bedroom house with a backyard, a garage, a bathroom and decent lounge/dining area costs more than $800,000.

If I want an ensuite, and a big yard and air con and new, it would be over $1,000,000 easy.

How much where you live?

Update:

At the moment you need about $1.05 US to buy $1 AUD. Croydon is about 12kms from Sydney City Centre, on the train line, but not a "fancy" suburb! But I think our salaries are better here than the US ie a teacher gets about $80k a year. Further out from the city (takes over a hour to get to work then) a similar house, but not new, is about $500,000.

Still it alot more expensive here it seems!

Typical 3 bedroom would sell for 600k US dollars. Town's location to Manhattan is what keeps the prices high.

I am in Panania in Sydney (near Revesby / Padstow / Picnic Point). The houses here are cheaper than that for the same thing - pretty much $600,000 give or take. Don't be afraid to search further out - it is still only 40 - 45 minutes to the city on the train from here and it is a lovely family area, safe and the school are pretty decent (if you do a bit of research). I don't like the areas closer to the city - way too much traffic and too crowded. Her I can just drop into the shops and pretty much park the car every time, you walk down the street here and everyone says hello to you and you stop and chat to local people all the time. We have pretty handy child care centres here and the waiting lists are not as long as some areas and def not as expensive.

You could also look at the Blue Mountains - my Sister lives in Glenbrook and it is a lovely place - you will get a decent house there for a good price and if you buy near a rail way station the trip is one hour to Central from Glenbrook - you can read a good book on the way in!!!

I know it is hard in Sydney, but you just need to drive around and scope out different suburbs, some are nicer that others and also one side of a suburb can be nicer than the other side (depending).

Our house is 4 bedrooms plus a study (one bathroom), on a 530sqm block, is clad and a little on the old side but we are gradually doing it up as we go and as we can afford it. We paid $455,000 about 4 years ago and already we would have made over $100,000 profit on it - so these areas are actually quite a good investment.

We would all like a on-suite, new appliances, a big house, brick or brand new or both, and close to the city. But the truth is - you can either mortgage yourself up to the hilt and stress about it for the next 25-30 years or you can be sensible and compromise on what you get, maybe a bit smaller house (is easier to clean), maybe a little on the old side, maybe you will have to travel an extra 20 minutes a day or so. We all have to live within our means and accept that no matter what type of house we have, there will always be someone with a better one to show off with.

Just start off smaller and then move in 5 - 10 years, that's what we did, we had a villa to start off and then moved to a house. But Villa's and units are expensive now because of the strata fees - maybe better to start off with a small house.

Good luck you will get there, just don't expect more than what you should afford.
