1994 Honda Civic is an erratic starter?
About 6 months ago my Civic wouldn't start some of the time. I found the clutch switch that is wired with the starter was out of adjustment. I adjusted the switch and all was well and the car started starting reliably. This week the car is back to starting some of the time with the key and some of the time I need to push start the car. I checked the wire from the igniton to the starter with a volt meter. When my friend turns the key there is nothing until run the positive wire for the volt meter on the ignition wire on the starter and ground the other volt meter wire. When I use the volt meter check the car starts every time. What can I do to fix the car to start reliably as it should without the voltmeter trick ?
I found that the starter wasn't getting current from the ignition . I found a relay between the ignition and the starter, so I traded the relay with an identical relay I had and the car starts now.

Well you could have a bad ignition switch. Try slowly turning the ignition switch on/ off /on etc to see if the starter all of a sudden cranks over ok. Your doing well because most people jump to the conclusion that their starter is bad. There's an awful lot of good starters that are replaced when the problem is as simple as a bad battery, battery cable connections, clutch or neutral safety switch or ignition switch problem. Won't you really be frustrated if you replace that starter and you still have the same problem? Then the first thing people say is "Oh, my new starter is bad!".
Even if it's not the problem, I'd buy a new battery if yours is over 4 or 5 years old and clean the battery cable connections real good with a wire brush. You can't test electrical things until you know you've got a good battery and battery connections.

I know this is an outdated question but for future reference a person can install a start button to bypass a bad ignition switch. Switches are difficult to install while buttons are pretty easy.
