My computer suddenly lost it's wireless capability?

My laptop computer has been connected wireless to my home network for some time now. All of a sudden it has no internet connection and the wireless icon is gone from the toolbar. Wireless capability

is enabled as is network discovery both on laptop and desktop computer. I thought possibly something with the router so I recycled that. I'm running fibre-op internet. My wii is still able to access the web so I don't know what the problem might be. The network map is not picking up the laptop at all. When I try to search for network to join with the laptop it shows nothing. When it was working properly it would give me the choice of my secure network and 2 others in the area. Any suggestions or possible help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Deb

Update:

Thanks for the replies everyone :-) I've did make sure the wireless button was in the one position.

I will have to check in to getting a new wireless card.

I know this is kind of any obvious one, but I see it a lot... did you, by chance, accidentally bump the switch which turns the wireless transceiver off? In some cases it's a switch on the side of the computer. With many of the newer laptops, it's a touch control at the top of the keyboard. If you've already checked that, just update your question and I'll think of something else.

There is often a switch or button to toggle the wireless internet on and off. In some cases it is a key combination such as [Fn]+[F4]. If your laptop doesnt have a dedicated switch or button to enable/disable the wireless then look on your F-Keys for an icon which corresponds to a wireless antenna icon, and then hold the [Fn] key and press that key.

In the case where none of those work, you can do one of two things -- that involve going into the 'device manager'

    To enter the device manager

    1) Hold the [Windows] Key down and press the [Pause/Break] key

    2) On the menu that pops up, find an entry that says 'Device Manager'

    3) Expand the heading that says 'Ethernet devices/adapters'

    4) Locate the one for your wireless adapter

At this point, you can check if the wireless radio function is enabled by:

    1) Right clicking on your wireless adapter

    2) Selecting Properties

    3) Clicking on the 'Advanced' tab on the menu that pops up

    4) Checking for an option that says 'Wireless Radio' or something similar.

    5) Making sure it is set to 'enabled'

Alternatively, you can uninstall the wireless adapter (it will be reinstalled when you reboot the machine) by:

    1) Right-clicking on the wireless adapter

    2) Selecting 'Uninstall' -- if there is a box that says 'Remove driver files' then make sure it is left clear (unchecked)

    3) Go ahead with it, and then reboot.

Check the switch per the above reply first, but it could also be your wireless card is fried. My Gateway laptop did the same thing and I was able to connect to wifi networks using a wireless adapter (looks like a memory stick, costs about $30.00) until I had a chance to replace the wireless card.
