Potential Damage of putting drops of chemical bleach on food?

Hi.

My idiot mother thinks its completely acceptable to put drips of Clorox on vegetables now, to 'properly' clean them to reduce potential E. Coli. (yeah, she heard the news yesterday, and this is her reaction). I'm against it completely, since it does stress NO internal intake. Unfortunately, this isn't the first. She thought medicinal alcohol is the same alcohol to use for cooking. Still, besides that, I'm looking for any potential evidence that it's harmful for your health, AND is not even used to remove bacteria by professionals. I just need some convincing before she inadvertently poisons herself.

Actually, products similar to Clorox are used in sterilising solutions for baby bottles. Milton fluid contains the same compound, but without all the additives of Clorox. Using pure Clorox is a bad idea, because of the additive ingredients.

Bleach soluton (without additives such as colourants and foaming agents) is sometimes used to treat drinking water in emergencies. 2 drops of bleach per L of water (or 8 drops per gallon) is sufficient. I expect your mother uses more than that, though, and she is at severe risk of poisoning if she keeps it up. Bleach is an oxidising agent and can promote the production of free radicals and harmful ions, capable of causing severe damage to internal organs, skin and eyes. Especially if concentrated. The formation of poisonous chlorine is also a reason not to do this.

Alright Bleach is not a good thing to put in the food, it's better to boil the veges. A small amount might go unnoticed but bleach technically is sodium hypochlorite when ingested in small amount are usually benign. Ingestions of low concentration needs vigilant observation for any signs of deterioration. Episode of vomiting, respiratory problem (i.e. difficulty breathing) needs emergency room treatment and in-patient hospitalization.

It is also very dangerous as without proper care it may even result in death. Prolonged exposure might reveal what not.. Don't and i can't stress enough DON'T take it.

You might have to call someone to tell your mother this isn't right, and could get arrested for negligence and putting the lives of other people in danger..

Please do explain it very clearly and do some research on what happens when you ingest bleach.

Sodium Hypochlorite, the main ingredient in bleach, is a POISON.

Ingesting it on purpose is just plain RETARDED.

    E. coli lives within us. It's NORMAL FLORA, found on your skin and in your intestines. You can't live without it.

It's only 1 type of E. Coli, (H7:157) that is dangerous, because like botulism, it makes a toxin that causes food poisoning.

Food processing plants already spray bacteriocides on her produce to kill bacteria (including E. coli)... Is she not aware of this?

As for the alcohol thing... What's Medicinal alcohol -- you mean rubbing alcohol (isopropyl)? That stuff should NEVER be ingested either. It's denatured and can make you sick in amounts higher than a few ounces.
