Christians, why does Hell exist?

According to Christian theology, God is omnipotent, so Hell exists either because (a) God created it, or (b) he allows it to exist. (or both)

The question, then, is WHY does God allow Hell to exist?

If he wants to keep sinners/those who don't accept Jesus out of Heaven, couldn't he have simply created a place for sinners' souls to go that wasn't Heaven, but also wasn't ETERNAL torture in the flames of Hell? Or couldn't he have just made these souls no longer exist, such as before we were born?

It just seems like God could have created a less cruel method of handling sinners' souls...because with Hell, it's either accept Jesus and get into Heaven, or TORTURE. God certainly could have come up with something short of torture.

I completely understand the concept that God gives everyone the gift of choice and they can choose to accept Jesus and get into Heaven. But why does God think Hell is a valid alternative to accepting Jesus? It certainly seems vindictive to go with Hell rather than the alternatives I described above.

Update:

@prophecy nut -

If God wanted to keep the Osama bin Ladens and Hitlers out of Heaven, why not just make their souls cease to exist when they died (like before we were born)? Why does Hell have to be the alternative?

So Christians can be amused by watching people burn. I mean, I'm sure you can learn to do some wicked harp solos up there on your cloud, having had a trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion millennia to practice, but it must get boring after a while. And plus, Christians won't be able to bomb any brown people up in heaven, which was their #1 pastime here on earth, because the Christian god is as much a cracker racist as Christians are and doesn't let brown people into heaven.

    God’s Word states:

“The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages.”

Since the dead “are conscious of nothing at all,” they cannot hear, see, speak, feel, or think. They no longer earn any wages. How could they? They are incapable of any work!

Moreover, “their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished,” for they cannot express any emotion.—Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10.

What the Bible says on this subject is simple and clear—the dead do not continue to live somewhere. There is nothing that leaves our body at death

Think of it this way: The life that we enjoy is like the flame of a candle. When the flame is extinguished, it does not go anywhere. It is simply gone.

Think of the implications of that one simple but powerful truth.

The dead are not conscious, they can no longer hear, see, speak, feel, or think.

Therefore, they cannot be experiencing unbearable suffering in a place of fiery torment.

However, the Bible teaches that the dead who are in God’s memory will be resurrected. What a wonderful hope!—John 5:28, 29.

Hell exists for the same reason jails and penitenteries exist. Do you really want Hitler, Saddam, or Osama bin Ladin leaving next to you in heaven? I think not. God did everything He could to keep people out of hell to the point of sacrificing His own Son. What more do you want.

There is no place of eternal torment or torture for flesh in scripture. Hell is simply the grave where the dead are buried. There is a lake of fire which burns eternally into which those who intentionally reject or disobey God will be tossed and immediately burned up.

Hi! I thought this too. Think about it, Hell seems like a really bad place!

Hell was created for Satan and his demons (fallen angels) because they really deserve that.

Unfortunately those who don't accept the open invitation of salvation in Jesus Christ will go there, because willingly or not, those unbelievers are choosing Satan over God.

Remember we believe Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. When you reject Jesus, you reject God. Also we are too sinful even in our most good hearted nature to come before God. Because our spirits died when Satan deceived Adam and Eve. Spiritually dead go to hell.

Jesus Christs death and ressurection gives us spiritual life :)

Some sects of Christianity do believe in some of the things you suggested - a lesser heaven or death being the grave etc. LDS, Jehovah's Witnesses etc.
