can employer withhold a day pay?

An employer called me to come in and told me to bring in my uniform for work. We talked and he asked that I start that day. I asked him what the position paid and he told me 10.00 hourly entry. I worked from 2-11pm. About 6:00 I was told from an employer that I was working for free and the chef was just checking out a few people untill making a choice. After 2 weeks I called an asked when I could pick up my one day of pay and he will not answer my calls. what should I do?

If you were doing work that benefited the employer they have to pay you for the hours worked.

Contact your state's department of labor and make a wage claim.
