Atheists: Where does the Bible state the world is flat?

People that say the Bible says the world is flat, is truly ignorant.

I've noticed quite a bit of people saying it on this forum.

In Isiah 40:22 it clearly states the world is not flat. Which is amazing, since most people in that time period thought it was flat.

The orginal hebrew word used in this passage is 'khug', meaning 'roundness'. The closest word they had to spherical at the time.

Many of you will argue that the bible says 'the four corners of the earth'. This proves that you are just trying to find flaws within the Bible, and are not objectively researching it. If you take those passages back to the original language, you'll find that it is referring to the cardinal direction (north, south, east, west).

I've also seen it argued that passages that say "god looked on the whole earth" or something to that effect, is logically impossible because it would imply the world is flat. This is ignorance at its best, if I believe God is omniscient, omnipresent, and all powerful then he could have no problem with this.

These arguments are ridiculous considering that the Bible clearly states the world is round.

False. The Hebrews had different words for "circle" and "sphere", and Isaiah definitely says "circle".

Also, the Greeks knew not only that the Earth was round, they were remarkably close in their estimation of it's circumference.

Also, the verse immediately after the one you quoted likened the earth to the floor of a tent. Where do you place a tent? On flat ground.

Finally, I would direct you to Job:

"Job 38:12-3 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?"

The bible doesn't say that Earth is the center of the universe but people got burned at the stake for saying otherwise. People were burned at the stake for saying that the earth was not flat regardless of what the bible says.

The orginal hebrew word used in this passage is 'khug', meaning 'roundness'. The closest word they had to spherical at the time.

You are assuming that they were thinking of a sphere.

These arguments are ridiculous considering that the Bible clearly states the world is round.

The bible also says that the universe was created in 6 days, there is little beyond that level of ridiculous.

Those people just want to argue. The Bible states that the earth was circular - which, in the language of the Bible translators, did not mean a flat round surface. The earth is round - spherically round.

"Ends of the earth" was an expression meaning throughout all of the earth, and "four corners of the earth" refers to the four points on a compass. I don't see anyone taking issue with weather people on TV who use the expresssions of the sun setting or rising, despite their knowledge that it doesn't actually work that way.

Well Technically, who's to say what terms they used to describe things have the same meaning as today?

Circle, sphere, i mean come on . who cares. as long as he didn't say it's FLAT, then you should be okay interpreting it as ROUND.

b/c i'm sure if you asked someone what shape a beach ball is, most likely they're gonna say circle but really mean sphere.

People are digging too deep in the question :-)

i dont really care but w/e

Actually, the word used is "circle" which is a flat disc - aka FLAT

Btw, the hebrew word used translates into "round" as in a circle. Try doing some actual research before you embarass yourself.

    Btw, you're kinda ignorant yourself.

    Have a nice day.

If your 'god' was anything other than a bronze-age myth, the creator of the universe would have told the ancient Jews that the planet is an oblate spheroid. Your 'god' must be ignorant or retarded.

Indeed, it doesn't, so i advocate your intentions here.

"Four corners" doesn't mean the earth is flat, despite what some may think.

No one in the bible came out and said "The world is flat" it actually implies otherwise.

You think atheists own bibles to quote from?

I will start off by saying that I am not an atheist, and I don't think the world is flat.

And all I want to say is if you were confident in your religion, you wouldn't feel the need to shove it down everyone's throats.

It certainly claims that the world is small enough to be completely flooded.
