Well, the same could be said about the politics section. Politics and religion are touchy subjects that cause controversy between those that differ in beliefs. Thumbs and thumbs down isn't really the issue. The purpose of that mechanism was so that users who answer could see whether or not their answer was agreed with or not. The other purpose of it was so that users who read answers could vote on their own as to whether or not they agree with the answer. Basically it is there for users to agree or disagree.

The real culprit is the individual. The problem isn't thumbs up or down. The problem has to do with a lack of respect. In the religion category for example, users both Christian and non Christian and even those of other faiths fail to respect differing view points. As a result things are said that cause more separation between different view points and often times it leads to a lot of shouting (figuratively) but no one is listening. So I say this to say, the problem is with users. We as individuals control how we respond to different views. The thumbs up or down is merely a representation of how we feel. It does not dictate how we respond to users. I do see your point, but in these days, tolerance is not as prevalent as it was in the past.
