...of a rhetorical question (or undisguised rant) they read on this site? Genuine question: people spend a lot of time and effort posting them and answering them and making sock puppets for them, which suggests that they think it's worthwhile. But why? What's the motivation there?

So, it turns out I'm off work for at least another month, and all this lounging around not doing anything is making me nostalgic for my teenage years. I grew up on AD&D, and Merentha kept me going through medical school...I'm looking for a text-based online MUD (MUCK, MUSH or MOO would also be acceptable) that people who don't have the manual dexterity for World of Warcraft might use.

(And if you're too young to have any idea what the question even means, pass me my pipe and slippers and let me tell you 'bout the good ol' days, before graphics were invented....)

I've always fed birds in my garden, but just lately there's been a cat (several cats?) without bells on sneaking around and killing them. I want a humane way of keeping the cats away, and someone recommended a sonic alarm, but I suspect that would drive my dog crazy. Any suggestions?

Like mant people here, I have no desire for actual new information on any topic. I just want to award five stars to the person who best reflects my own opinions and prejudices back to me.

So, I'm off work for at least a few weeks with a broken right arm, and I can't write at all - but I can still type. I don't really want to invest hundreds in a full-scale laptop; all I need is a screen, a keyboard and a usb port, the lighter the better. Can anybody suggest something for me, or at least point me to where I can start a search? Many thanks.
