On my cars, if I don't rotate them, I only get half of the mileage out of them. So if I do not rotate then as recommended, I still have to buy four tires and twice as often.

You get to buy the four new tires at some future date, on some schedule, rather than having unusual wear fail one tire prematurely.
Sort of like "replace on schedule" or "fix or repair daily".
