What's a typical Australian meal including a meat/seafood dish, a veggie dish, and maybe another side dish?

I'm trying to make a meal from each country in the world and I'm at Australia this week. Do Aussies really cook "shrimp on the barbie"? If so, what would go with that?

    haha...shrimp on the barbie:)

A traditional australian meal might be steak (if you can get a barramundi fish fillet, they are really good), a salad, kebabs (any type) and maybe icecream for dessert? You could also have a barbecue with sausages e.t.c. Or a meat pie? No one in australia (at least, not where I live) cooks shrimp on the barbie. There isn't really a typical Australian meal, though; people eat all sorts of food here

The we try to always have a veggies and I try to do frozen just because it is easier and cheaper then fresh and they are just as nutritious. We have a steamer so they just get warm and are still slightly crunchy. Boiling veggies they loose lots of their nutrition. You can mix up the veggies you eat and it is a no brainer. It only takes about 15 min in the steamer for them to be done. When in season we sauté zucchini with a little olive oil and has about a ¼ a teaspoon of sugar to a whole zucchini give it a hint of sweet. As for a starch you can do a myriad of things. With Potatoes you can Bake them Make potatoes salad with low fat mayo (find this a great place to add extra veggies and I put shredded carrots in it) Then we do rice often but not the minute rice stuff though. I make it on the stove sometime but often I use my rice cooker you just measure then turn it own and walk away. You can do brown rice wild or even just white. Use some chicken or beef broth to give it flavor. Some times we do hot buttered noodles. We also do some boxed sides sometimes like scalloped potatoes or something like that. However the thing we do most often is some type of casserole where the starch is already in like a cheesy chicken and rice casserole with a salad on the side. Baked sweet potatoes are great also and occasionally a sweet pototoe fries

There isn't really any such thing as a typical Aussie meal except for a breakfast of damper bread, fried eggs and tea. What they mean by "shrimps" are what in England we call Tiger Prawns..which you can buy raw and frozen from most supermarkets. Thaw them and then place them in a bowl with half a glass of white wine, a tablespoon of lemon juice, a finely shredded chili pepper..without any of the seeds. and a couple of cloves of fresh, finely chopped garlic, a pinch of salt and a little finely shredded fresh basil..or dried if you prefer. Marinate for at least two hours and then thread onto skewers, alternating with halved cherry tomatoes, chunks of deseeded cucumber and whatever you like..cook under the grill or on a hot barbie for a couple of minutes a side and then check a prawn..start with just one skewer to get the time right before you cook the rest of them..if the prawn is pink all the way through then it is cooked. Serve with salad, crusty bread and the rest of the white wine. A dressing made from greek style or greek yogurt, finely chopped spring onions and a little garlic, with or without a dash of lemon juice as you prefer, goes well with this.

Alternatively, pop into your local book store or library and take a look a the Australian Women's Weekly barbecue recipe book..take notes.

Nowadays Australia has a population that is incredibly diverse as to its ethnic origins and a huge variety of basic food ingredients as well as most people being willing to try new things..so that Australian cuisine is a mixture from around the world with strong Greek, English, American and Chinese influences in particular.

um, we have a lot or barbecued food so maybe try sausages or steaks, we usually have a healthy salad on the side for example; rocket leaves, lettuce, tomato oh, and tomato sauce :) we also love meat pies with tomato sauce.. never forget the tomato sauce :) i hope this helps.

    OH, AND ANZAC BISCUITS!

they are so easy to make, and they taste really good :)
