Questions regarding duty free/trs purchases?

I'll be traveling from Australia to NZ then Fiji, then back to NZ and finally returning home to Australia. I'm looking at buying a camera lens (~$700 worth) as well as some duty free booze and a carton of smokes for my mate in NZ. I was also hoping to buy some more booze/smokes when traveling from NZ to Fiji. The smokes and booze likely won't be coming back.

I was wondering what my limits will be and what happens if i exceed those limits.

Also are there separate limits when i'm traveling from au > nz and then nz > fiji? or is it one collective limit?

Thanks I've basically got no idea about how the whole duty free thing works so i'd greatly appreciate if you can shed some light on it =)

the limit is for each country that you are entering - and there is no collective limit.

    for example

you can purchase cigs and booze to enter NZ (and NZ has its own limit on what can be brought into it duty free). If you consume them when in NZ, you could purchase additional to go to Fiji (depending on what Fiji's duty free limits are). Again when leaving Fiji and on to NZ, you can bring in a total of the amount that NZ permits. However, do note that if you purchase items in first stop to NZ and do NOT consume (like camera), it will be included in the materials that you need to claim when entering each successive country.

Also, thinking about your question, if your itinerary is Australia to Fiji with just a layover in NZ, then you actually do not go thru customes in NZ.
