This is some pretty cool stuff. Like Rish mentioned this is been done in Photoshop and YouTube is definitely a good resource. There are many other sites that are specialized in showing you how any kinds of effects are done with Photoshop. those are created in adobe Photoshop. search on youtube for Photoshop Beam tutorial. you will find some useful tutorials on how to recreate that effect
