Jalisco is pretty big I was there in October 2010. I like the town of Teocaltiche, San Juan de Los Lagos they are not city living but a nice atmosphere. Yo could also go to Zapopan or Guadalajara they're nice also. And money wise I was there for 10 day and took around $800 but remember the further into MX you go the less that your money is going to be worth. So if anything try exchanging it for pesos in Tijuana if you are flying from there. I came bk with extra cash also. Also if your a big spender then take a lil extra. Even though its not that expensive.

I like Carmay's answer. I just want to add that the amount of money you should take depends on what you want to buy. I have been warned to take care of my money, like hiding it. But since I dont dress extravagant, have a camera around my neck, flash my money, dont go to bars there, no one has bothered me. I am going to Guadalajara this summer to study at IMAC for 3 weeks. I am not sure how much money to bring, but I will ask my locals in Juarez when I go there in a few days. I look for Spanish books which are cheaper there, make up, and other touristy things like magnets, jewelry. I have found out that the same bracelet that costs 100 pesos in Juarez costs 10 times or more in Osaka, Japan!..also try to deal with the vendors. I always do and get a fair deal to my liking, but I am a Mexican so that might help. I will also exchange my dollars for pesos in Juarez.!
