Help! My HP Pavillion p6210y fan speeds up and slows down repeatedly!?
Starting this morning, the fan on my HP Pavillion desktop has been speeding up very fast for about two minutes, then it slows down to its normal very quiet speed and runs normal for about five minutes, then repeats the speeding up process.
All of the air intake/outflowing vents are clear of dust and have nothing surrounding them to block airflow. What could the problem be? This computer will be two years old in the fall.

I have the EXACT same PC and the EXACT same issue started on the EXACT same day. The only thing I can think of is that either a Windows update or a HP update has caused this. It is annoying the heck out of me. Doing a system restore to a a few weeks ago didn't change a thing. Fan still turns on loud. That leads me to believe it was an HP update that changed something in the BIOS. I will be calling HP and complaining about this!

It was a BIOS update. If you saved an earlier BIOS version (5.14), then you may be able to flash it, though the system may tell you it cannot do that.
HP told me this model is no longer supported and that I might be able to find help in chat support on the site. Rather than spend time doing that, I bought a fan speed controller from Newegg (Zalman Fanmate 2) for less than $10. I use SpeedFan to monitor the temperature inside. So far it has worked, though the temperature is better when the side access panel is off.
The bottom line is that the noise (think hair dryer) is gone.

Possibly, there are problems on the processor fan holder. Processor fan has 4 legs. If one leg is loose (not stuck firmly in the mainboard), processor temperature to rise (the fan will spin faster). After processor temperature down, then (fan rotation will be stable). However, because processor temperature back up, fans will be back racing, and so on.
So the question on the processor fan holder. Try to check the processor fan is 4 feet, there are loose or not. Solution: replace processor fan.
