Why is the core of my tree logs black?

I recently cut off a huge branch off of my tree... Just now, I notice that the core of the logs that I cut are black. What does this mean, the tree is dead?

It could be an American Black Walnut tree. They have a dark purplish, almost black heartwood and a lighter wood between the heartwood and the bark. If so, or a similar variety, it could simply be a trait of the tree if the texture or density of the wood is the same.

It could have been caused by a lighting strike in the past.
