Hiding my IP address?
I want to do stuff online but Hide my IP so people can't track this, at first I thought of buying / downloading a Hide IP service from the internet but Couldn't I was thinking: Could I just go to a local library and use their computer, therefore if someone were to track my IP they wouldn't know it was me specifically?

You can't hide your IP address.
All computers have MAC addresses. They all different and they ALL used to identify different computers in the entire universe. Yes, everything on earth and in space.
Now, most of the time, all computers don't published your Mac Address unless your firewall is setup to do so.
. However, you cannot hide your IP address that simply if you plan to use an ISP because all ISP have STATIC and DHCP assigned numbers pooled by the government who regulates their countries internet or an agency the government assigned them to do.
People who say their software can hide their IP address are wrong, and such software can be a malicious software or a bogus software for any number of reasons.
Has for tracking. Let me explain how the internet works.
ISP (Internet service providers) gives you a modem. This modem has a unique Mac Address that is not displayed in the internet but only to your ISP and yourself. The modem also has a IP ADDRESS that has been installed by your ISP so that you can use their internet connection. Time warner cable usually use 76.174.---.--- in So.Cal (The dashes are numbers that are all different. Anyone can learn the first 2 inputs to where it usually at, but not the last 2.) To the public, the IP address can only give you a general idea where this IP address, but no exact location. Only Law enforcement and your Internet Service Provider know where this device is because your ISP tells your local government where it is but not who owns it. Account information is private and law enforcement need a subpoena to request this account information in the USA.
Now for hte fun part.
Since you router has a unique DHCP or Static address (or both) it doesn't share this information with all your computers in the network. To have a network you need a router or a modem with routing capabilities. If you are directly connected to the modem, then nobody else can use your internet connection because you computer has effectively became your modems IP address.
Now in this network, you can have 255 computers but all computers had to be uniquely assigned an IP address that is the DEFAULT GATEWAY IP ADDRESS. Most people don't change their DEFAULT IP ADDRESS that the gateway owns which is usually 192.168.1.1
When you computer, and the other hypothetical 255, are connected they all need different IP address like 192.168.1.2-257. This is usually assigned by your Gateway (Router) if DHCP is enabled or is manually configured correctly. This IP address is not published to the internet. Only the router stores this information and it does not share it. You would have to see it in the list of Attached devices.
All in all, you don't have to worry about anyone tracking you down. Here's a lil ghetto pic =p
Internet

\/
Modem-Unique IP address for a network or user to connect to the internet. No modem, no internet
|
\/
Router (must have a router to have a network. A network is more than 1 PC connected to the same connection.) Router traffics data to multiple computers independently. All PCs have IP addresses assigned to them that is not the MODEM's IP address.

\/
all computers on the network. with different IP addresses assigned by router, not ISP or Modem.
Here how to test
go to Run or in vista/win7 type in search box cmd and then ipconfig/all
This will show you your IP address on your network.
Then go to your router and see the DNS which is the address assigned to you by your company which is the modems MAC. (Usually, but no always)
Then go to this website http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and see which IP address that matches. You'll notice that your assigned IP address by ISP is what is displayed and not your MAC address or IP address that router gave you.
Source(s): I was using Cable ISP as an example. DSL assigns your IP address by your account that your ISP has by it's number and converts that number into an unique IP address. If you are using a Phone 56k connection, you can't be in the USA. hahaha. That's so 90s =/ - 7 years ago
14 Jan 2014 - http://hidemyass.com/vpn/r12294:3/ - review by Tana M from using OpenVPN & PPTP on Mac.
" I have been using HMA for well over a year now. It has been easy to use, has a clean, user friendly Control Panel, and definitely offers a level of security/anonymity that makes me smile on a daily basis.
When I first started using the program, I got an email from FaceBook informing me that I was using an 'unknown' computer from an 'unknown' location... I was ELATED!!! If FaceBook couldn't 'find' me, I knew I had found the right product!! BRAVO!!! "

You can hide your IP address quite easily now using a VPN app, these are pretty clever as they install not just on PC's but any Internet capable device. Once they are installed switch them to which country you want to be in, not only will it hide your IP address anonymously but it will also allow you to watch all US & UK television anywhere in the world unblocked which is a pretty handy tool for Sky, Netflix, BBC, HULU etc.
see http://www.rhinovpn.com/ for VPN app download.

Yes using another network especially a crowded one like at a library or mcdonalds, borders, barns and noble, starbucks will do. they will know the business but not the person in most cases.
make sure you format you computer and reinstall your operating system for MAXIMUM privacy.
i also recomend Linux as you can clone your mac address :) www.pinguyos.com is a good distro
