I just bought this book. THE WHOLE PET DIET by Andi Brown. Now im confused on what to feed my dogs?

In the recipies in the book meats always the main ingredient then carrots, celery, collard greens, suash, pumpkin, rosemary, sage, even garlic? I thought garlic was poision to dogs? It also suggest plain yogurt, cottage cheese and raw or cooked eggs, fruit too. Does this sound like things a dog should eat? Please help. Thanks.

Onions are poisonous for dogs, and since garlic is very similar and contains the same sulfur compounds, I wouldn't feed them. I do know carrots, celery, and green beans are great for dogs. Cottage cheese and yogurt aren't things they should eat regularly, but more of an occasional snack.

When you're feeding kibble, you want to avoid any meat by-products, wheat, corn, or beef.

I've not read the book but I can say that cats would get minimal amounts of grains/veggies from their prey's stomach contents. I wouldn't recommend adding large amounts but small amounts may be beneficial. Garlic's controversial but some people feed small amounts with no problems whatsover. I just avoid it to be on the safe side. Also I would recommend gathering info from several sources and then drawing your conclusion. You'll have to make your own decision but I personally believe a carefully planned raw meat based diet is optimal if you have the time/inclination but next best would be a canned food diet. Good luck! PS - many vets unfortunately are not well versed in nutrition so you'll run the gammit if you start asking vets. That's why I think it's so important to do our own research.

Depending on the amount of meat in the diets it sounds as if the book may be based on BARF raw feeding. Garlic is just like chocolate, raisins, or onions. It is large quantities that are harmful. Many commercial dog foods contain garlic. Garlic is recommended by some as a flea preventative. Dogs generally love the taste of garlic.

I'd suggest going to the store and getting dog food.

    I use purina dog chow.

P.S. everything i think everything in there is safe for dogs, and that sounds fine if you want to cook them that, I think it would be more work considering that they will pretty much eat anything you put in front of them anyway. (unless you have an really picky dog)
