Hey, All The Metalheads...?

What gives you the right to label something 'not metal', unless it's punk or post-hardcore (another genre, in other words)? You know when someone asks a question, and the bands they list are like All That Remains or August Burns Red, and people answer 'That's not actually metal.'? F*ck that. And anyone who thinks that is just giving metalheads a bad name.

Now, call Avenged Sevenfold death metal, and you'll hear a thing or two from me. Call them metal? Go ahead, man. They're not 'not metal', and they certainly aren't just rock.

So I have two more questions for you, if you even read this far...

MQ: Favorite band that is the most metal of metal, so much metal, that listening to it gives you Mercury poisoning and turns you into a madhatter?

MQ2: Favorite band most would consider 'not real metal'?

Update:

It's interesting that the metalheads who seem pretty cool are answering this, and those who rage at anything that's not brutal are nowhere to be seen...

And hell yes, Urban Cyclist, I love Made Out Of Babies! Anything with Julie Christmas is magical and devious at the same time. Not to mention her solo album that came out a few months ago was pretty great as well =) Cheers!

Seriously don't pay it any mind. Metal is Metal, Hard Rock is Hard Rock, etc, etc, etc.

Not my fault some people can't tell the difference and others feel inadequate and get butthurt easily.

Funny part is I just got called out as some type of elitist, when I have always defended Metalcore and NuMetal as being Metal. The fact that a goodly portion of both SUCK, notwithstanding, does not disqualify something as "Metal".

Nor does something being "Metal" mean it is automatically good and great, and better than other music. A goodly amount of Metal does suck, as does a goodly percentage of ALL types of music. Truly outstanding bands are far between, but many people want to embrace mediocrity and then get pissy if you are not impressed.

\I'm actually genuinely sorry that some people have such small genitals and low self esteem that they can't handle people having a difference of opinion without getting their panties in a twist, or actually articulate an intelligible argument, so are forced to resort to trolling, reporting and really pathetic attempts at smear campaigns.

I could care less if a person listens to Bullet For My Valentine, or Rebecca Black, TBH, but at least TRY to actually know what you are talking about. And if you don't, instead of getting your feelings hurt, try educating yourself. We have access to this WONDERFUL thing called the internet.... all you got to do is Google it, and *POOF* like magic, there it is.

Now allow me to go cry in the corner cuz some people don't like the big bad, meany head Peaches.

(I always heard ignorance is bliss, but ya know, there are a couple people on here who SHOULD be deliriously happy and yet aren't. Guess it ain't so.)

MQ- At the moment a tossup between Obscura and Negura Bunget.

MQ2- IDK, probably Sevendust, Kittie or Evanescence. Never have figured out how stuff like Motley Crue could be Metal, yet Evanescence is not.

I'd say that bands like Avenged Sevenfold are more of metal-influenced rock than actual metal. It's not that they're not "brutal" enough - I just hear more rock in them than anything else. I mean, if brutality was the bar for being metal, than Folk Metal (or Power Metal for that matter) wouldn't really make the cut.

I can't speak for August Burns Red (haven't heard them), but I'd still say that All That Remains has enough of a metal sound to them to be considered metal.

I don't consider nu metal or glam metal to be actually "metal". Other than that, I'm pretty accepting of other genres into the metal realm.

MQ - Alestorm for sure, lol. (Origin on a more serious note)

MQ2 - Most of my tastes fall into the Black and Death realm, but....umm, Rage Against The Machine. Not that I consider them metal, though. Lol.

Even a lot of these punk and post-hardcore bands have some metal influence, so often it's difficult to really separate what's "basically metal" with external traits, and what's some other genre with metal traits. Hell, I just listen to a band and go by intuition. If it sounds like metal, why bother splitting hairs? I've listened to enough metal bands and artists of other genres to be able to judge relatively well what's metal and what's not, I should think; not that I'm an expert or anything.

MQ: Weird question, kinda, cause you're asking me to pick my most favorite metal band, and the "most metal" band I listen to, which do not happen to be the same. I guess the highest intersection of the two in my library would be Cryptopsy, or Meshuggah. I like Meshuggah a lot more, but Cryptopsy is more brutal.

MQ2: Kayo Dot, I guess. Their first album had some metal, but everything since then has been pretty non-metal. Amazing band, though. Check out their latest record, 'Coyote,' if you have the chance.

I agree completely. Those kind of elitists just give metalheads a bad name.

MQ: Uh, not sure. The definition of what bleeds metal seems to change from month to month. I guess I'll go with Cynic. I think they're metal enough?

MQ2: I don't really know what people consider not metal these days either. Maybe Korn? They've been a guilty pleasure of mine since I was about 12.

Hey Dave. I didn't know you were such a big fan of these bands. ;)

The "metal" or "not metal" debate will never end.

I know this isn't answering your question, but I just noticed on your Last FM page that you are a Battle of Mice fan. I thought I was the only one who liked them.

Do you ever listen to Made Out of Babies?:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbeqCQsWmUc

BQ: Most "Metal" band, maybe Slayer, Metallica, Black Sabbath, or Motorhead.

BQ2: I listen to alot of different stuff, so I'm not really sure. Maybe System of a Down.

@ Erowid! I wish people would show more of an interest in Avant-garde Metal [2]

@ Dave. Good to find another Julie Christmas fan. Cheers. :)

You cool Dave, unlike some weak-minded fools that brainwash easily and think they're wolves when they're really sad little bleating sheep, I applaud you Dave for consistently rising above such brainmush idiocy. Also I pretty much agree with your rant, I've had too many people try and tell my that 70s and 80s Metal isn't Metal anymore.

I think what really amuses me most is people thinking they are so openminded about music cause they listen to Pop and then riding down everyone that listens to everything else, basically doing exactly what they're railing against. Guess they're just too damn dumb to recognize their own colossal hypocrisy.

    MA: How about Kreator?

    MA2: Blue Oyster Cult.

Well, nothing really gives us the right to do so....

But then again, I've never said something was not metal, I just go with the "good or garbage" rating. Typically for me though, bands that warrant the "garbage" rating tend to be the bands called "not-metal."

    Co-incidence, through and through.

    MA1: Uh...my favorite ones.

    MA2: Enya

Most people are misinformed about labels for plenty of bands that actually ARE Metal.

MQ: SLAYER IZ M OST METAL BAND EVAR LOL

MQ2: The Beatles aren't metal. Neither is Green Day, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, etc.
