When should you use fertilizer in your flower garden?
I am a beginning gardner and just planted flowers in my flower bed. I mixed the dirt in the flower bed with bagged soil that contained fertilizer. Some of the flowers said on the tag to use a fertilizer treatment after planting them but should I not do it because the soil has fertilizer in it? Should I wait awhile? Any advice would be appreciated! I have no idea what I'm doing.

If the bagged soil has fertilizer on, it will say how many months the fertilizer will last. If it doesn't, then, it is alright to fertilize it after 3 months. Remember to apply the fertilizer on the drip line of the flowering plant and not to close on the stem or you will harm the plant. Use a fertilizer intended for a flowering plant like 15-30-15 to boost the flowering potential of the plant. The first number on the fertilizer -15- is for the leaves development, the second -30- is for the root development and triggers flower production and the last -15- is for the overall health of the plant and enhances the color of the flowers. The way to fertilize on how, frequency, quantity to use is usually indicated at the back of the package. Happy gardening.

A plant newly potted will need some time so that it can grow new roots in order to absorb or take in the fertilizer that you will apply. How you fertilize and what type of fertilizer you use is dependent on what kinds of plants you growing, because every plant has a particular requirement with regards to nutrients, and this requirement should be met. I would recommend that you do not add any fertilizer at this time. Wait until your plants have developed and have a good root base started. Most plants only need to be fertilized every few months. You can fertilize more often with a diluted solution of fertilizer and never add fertilizer to dry soil as this can damage the roots.
