How do you distinguish between those who "speak" for God and false claims?

What makes some claims of people saying that God is speaking to them more reliable than others? How do you pick out the liars and the crazys from those that are given a place in scripture? It seems to me that this happens quite frequently still, yet no creditability is given to these claims nowadays. Is it solely a faith issue?

Update:

I should have stated that I'm an atheist. I want to know from a theist's point of view, what makes one person more credible than another?

Update 2:

But you're all missing one important fact. The Bible was written by these very people. What makes them any more credible? What qualifies them as being reliable enough to write the Bible?

Update 3:

Uhh, ok so "We know the authors of the Bible are credible because it says so in the Bible". That, and "We just have this feeling (Holy Spirit) that they are more credible." which is ALSO explained to us THROUGH THE BIBLE! Sheesh, that's like a physician saying that all the credentials you need from him is his word that he is a doctor. Why should you trust his claims? Well because he a qualified physician of course. Come on, I was hoping for something a little more sensible people.

In the Kalama Sutra, Buddha says.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it..

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

Now i could have under no circumstances considered this if i did not have faith in God simply by fact i wouldn't in any respect be on a project holiday to Columbia. yet once I under no circumstances new God or something like that i could call it a miracle becuase what else could somebody call that.

What the people who are "speaking for God" say, will line up perfectly with what God has said

Latest example is the waste of space Campings. He said He knew when the rapture would occur. God said, no one will know.

One of my important reasons to KNOW the bible

Usually people just accept whoever commends them, or tells them they're doing things right.

Or when they bring in a philosophy or prophecy that they like.

Even if they aren't necessarily legitimate.

I ask myself if their claims are in alignment with God's greatest commandment, "to love, as he has loved us," and overcoming Human Nature/Selfishness.

It's simple, really. I don't believe in anyone's "god", so they're ALL full of hoo-ey.

God does not speak to anyone. He gave us the bible so he wouldn't have to.

I'm sure that those that speak for God have a "Power Of Attorney" document from Him.

Only in hindsight, and not always

For example there were, and still are, followers of Harold Camping.
