should we buy a Whirlpool washing machine, or an LG?
Price wise they are about the same, which one is better?

I have a Whirlpool washing machine that is 37 years old and still running, but the problem is these days washing machines are not made to last more than a couple of years. It's really a crap shoot now. I should replace my machine as sometimes the transmission gets stuck and won't spin for a dozen loads of so, but I am afraid that ANYTHING I get will break down in a year or two. I've washed maybe 6,000 loads of wash in my Whirlpool, but I don't think you could expect more than 500-600 loads of wash from any new machine. I'd stay away from the computerized stuff as much as possible; when these start giving error codes it could be $750 to fix. Get a simple, basic machine with mechanical controls as much as possible. The more electronics there are the more things can go wrong. I'd also avoid machines that use high-speed spins that try to wring almost all the water out of the clothes before they even get out of the washer. This causes too many other problems. Top-loading washers are cheaper, but avoid the ones that don't even have an agitator and claim to use very low water levels or require high-efficiency soap. These designs, while sounding like great ideas, don't work worth crap.

Whirlpool would be my choice, how ever, find out if the dealer services what they sell. Some dealers job out the service work, which in my opinion, is non negotiable. Good Luck.
