Protocol: Funeral or Coronation?
When Betty Two finally shuffles off this mortal coil is there a protocol over what comes first, the funeral or the coronation of Charlie Three? Or is it just whatever makes practical sense based on the circumstances?

Although Charles will ascend the throne at the moment of his mother's death, and a Proclamation to that effect will be made from St James's Palace soon after, the coronation will not take place until well after the funeral. Plans are, no doubt, already in place for the funeral and for the coronation (all but the details) but it would surely be unseemly to celebrate the crowning of a new monarch without the old one being cold first!
Charles's ascent to the throne is automatic to continue the line, and it is this continuity that gives the National Anthem the line "God Save the King/ Queen. It is not about the incumbent, but about the institution.

Gosh, she has been the Queen for nearly as long as I can remember. I don't even want to THINK about her funeral....too depressing a thought. But, the entire world saw what a beautiful funeral that the royal family gave Diana....and I suspect that the Queen's funeral will be one of the most beautiful....and also one of the saddest ever.
Technically, the moment she dies, Charles becomes the King. Very soon after that, there is a proclamation to that effect. Then, there is a period of mourning for the Queen.
Then, plans are made for the coronation....which is a very big deal not only because of the historical significance...but to give everyone plenty of time to get all their plans made to be there, robes and coronets out of storage, and allow all the important personages time to make all their plans to attend.
It is an affair that requires all the skill of those whose job it is to deal with issues of seating and protocol...and though later monarchs might scale down the pomp and circumstance....I don't think Charles will be the one to do it. I think Charles so adores all the traditional things surrounding the official royal functions, that his coronation will be one just as grand in every way as his mother's was.
Coronations are not like royal weddings...at coronations....all the grand ladies don't wear old suits and hats....they wear gorgeous things and gorgeous jewelry and tiaras.

The successor becomes the soverign immediately upon the death of the reigning monarch. This is why the Royal Standard is never flown at half mast as there is always a soverign on the throne.
The order is as follows Lying in State first followed by State Funeral,
Coronation after a suitable interval - to allow time for preparations
Charles may not necessarily take the title Charles as king - he could be George VII.

When Elizabeth II dies, there will be a period of Court Mourning (usually six months to a year), and then a preparation time for the Coronation.
Charles immediately becomes King at the moment of HM's decease (the throne is never vacant).
The Coronation takes place AFTER the mourning.
FYI: George VI died in February 1952; Elizabeth II's Coronation took place in June 1953.

The funeral always comes first, with the coronation not until a year of more later. It would be in very bad taste to celebrate the coronation of a new monarch too soon after their predecessor's death, the year long gap allows for a suitable period of mourning.

Court Mourning lasts for different lengths of time depending on the level of the deceased. Monarchs usually have a year. Court dress will be black then as time passes - purple - etc.
the 'line' has to be carried on which is why HRH Prince Charles will become King the minute ~HM's last breath has passed but his Coronation which is a public confirmation of his position and general demonstration of loyalty by the peerage will happen a year later.

Funeral takes place about a week after death.
Coronation sometime in the next year, usually around 3 - 6 months.
And her name is absolutely NOT "Betty".

One of the prosenters on TV made the remark during the recent royal wedding that all the organising was a trial run for when the Queen dies. The last King died in 1952, but the Queens coronation was not until 1953

an exciting question! i grow to be going to declare through time to plot and organise it, yet you made me think of. in line with danger it nonetheless is, nevertheless. A funeral HAS to happen immediately and you will plan in enhance for it. you are able to, in case you go with to, delay the coronation so it is as reliable because it in all likelihood ought to be. and that i think of Pammy is reliable. it is so the occasion of the recent monarch isn't tinged via too a lot grief over the dying of the previous monarch
