How to get a cruise at the port on the day of the departure.?

We will be in Florida and thought we'd visit a port and see if any ships had empty cabins they wanted to fill at a very cheap price (better than sailing with empty cabins). I've heard this can be done - just wondering how best to do this.

Update:

Dejac - do you happen to know that web address? Sounds interesting

You can't do this any longer, since 9/11. Ships have to submit their lists of passengers several days before sailing, in order to clear security.

Most ships these days sail full, especially in the busy summer vacation months.

Since 9/11 Cruise ships are required to turn in their list of passengers 24hrs before departure to Homeland Security

There is a website that does something similar to this, however, you need to make a "reservation" of sorts, and be able to go when the price you want comes up. A cruise ship is not going to let you aboard as a walk-up like in a hotel.

    they no longer allow this.

if they were, they charge almost double.

    trust me.

it is a LOT easier to just pay at the beginning
