How do I get on craigslist to list something for sale in my local area?

Easy easy.

First, make SURE that what you are selling is not prohibited. Weapons, Weapons-related, BB guns, Pets, Food (unless sealed by a licensed facility), almost anything Medical, etc. There's a link to the Prohibited Items list that you'll find in the TOU. Once you know that you're fine with selling it, go to http://www.craigslist.org/ It will either open your city directly (based on IP) or a default city. If it is NOT your city, from the right-hand side pick STATES and then select the correct city.

At the top left, pick Post To Classifieds. That will walk you through how to post your ad.

In a few high-spam categories, like Housing, Cars, and Personals ads, you may be asked to phone verify your account DURING THE POSTING PROCESS. That's not unusual, you only do it once unless you get unlucky.

Make sure you scroll to the bottom of each page as you post. The second-to-last page says it's posted the ad at the top. It hasn't. You still have one more page to go.

It takes about 1 minute to do all this, 2 if you have to phone-verify, plus the actual time to type in your ad.

And remember, the site isn't "Free." You pay by helping to moderate it. If you see businesses posting outside of Dealer categories and Services, flag them. Flag ads that use a lot of html, flag ads that are posted more than once, and flag ads that are all-image (it is a spamming trick). If in doubt, flag the ad! It takes MANY people agreeing an ad might be bad to remove it, so don't hesitate.
