How old was your child when you taught them how to play chess?

I have just started teaching my 6 year old the pieces and how they move, so far so good.

Any young age (any!) at which they express an interest in the game is a correct age.

Many start young; but those taught before they are interested might give up the game.

I teach chess to students in pre-school thru grade 8 at a private school. Starting at the

second grade seems to be the usual best age to begin lessons, to have best behavior.

To anyone: don't give up. My son was 17 years old when I first taught him how to play.

I waited until he was interested; not pressure him. Baseball has much of his attention.

As a result of much patience, he still plays as an adult, instead of giving up the game.

I learned to play chess when I was 12 years old; that's also later than most.

Source(s): My son often won more prize money than I did, when he began in the lower sections. My son now plays on my team at U.S.Amateur Team events that are USCF-rated.

I don't have kids, but as a comparison, Gary Robson taught his son Ray how to play when Ray was three years old.

After playing almost daily for a whole year, Ray, at four years old, finally won a game against his Dad.

Ray is currently the youngest grandmaster in the United States. He earned the tile in January of 2010, when he was just 15 years old.

Any age is a good age. Every child should know how to play. They can then decide for themselves if it's something they wish to pursue or not.

My son is 6 and that i've got began coaching him interior the previous twelve months. He replaced into the single to coach interest in it besides, so why no longer. i could have been approximately that age while i began out besides, so I figured it replaced into approximately time. seems to be a sturdy age in my e book. My son has tremendously a lot have been given the easy strikes and we are able to now have a tremendously sturdy pastime - he seems to be tremendously organic at it, he has controlled to get me right into some pickles once or twice!

He was too old, but it has been found by research that the optimum age is 8 & no older than 15 for best results. Of course you can learn at any age.

That's about the right age. Some schools have chess clubs -investigate whether there's one in your child's school. It's very good brain exercise - if your child enjoys it. I couldn't get any of my kids near it!
