High school cheerleading [especially coaches]?

okay. basically i'm starting a high school cheerleading team from almost no legit skill. we will have between 6-12 girls. its for a private school so we are not sure we will have music, but were hoping to, which if we get it we will go to competition for the first time. basically i wanna know how your high school teams work like just general information, how long are practices? do you wear practice uniforms? how often do you condition, and work on tumbling/stunting? i know this is a vague question but i just need any information you can give me from personal high school cheerleading experience. i would especially appreciate it if coaches could reply i would love to hear what you have to say from your experience! thank you!

Wow! To start off, I think that it is so awesome you are starting a cheerleading program at your school! Cheerleading is such an awesome sport and very rewarding. We practice for 2 hours Monday-Friday and 2 1/2 hours in the morning on Saturdays. To condition, we use the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader's workout dvd. It is awesome! We also lift in the weight room at our school. We tumble, jump, and stunt everyday. If you are not fimilar with tumbling, jumping, or stunting or need to teach the girls from the basics up, bring in someone from an all star or gymnastics gym. They would be great help. Find out what the teams you will be going against look like. We just wear any approproat tshity, shorts, socks, and sneakers with hair up in a neat pony. Good luck!

This sounds like a challenge that if you have determined people it will work!

First, make sure that enough people [hopefully over 12.. so you have a selection], tryout or sign up that are interested.

Make sure that you have a budget of $100-more, because cheer is expensive. Our practices uually go for two hours after school, like any other sport. We begin by running for 10 min, THEN stretches, and off to stunting. We tumble every tuesday/thursday, but!!! WHEN YOU STUNT, please have an adult or someone who has cheer experience. I would start with preps and if you are doing competitions ease to fulls or even libs :D

As far as practice uniforms, we make sure everyone wears [non sleezy], soffee shorts, and a ribbed tank. Only certain tennis shoes [with smooth bottoms], for easy stunting [easy on the bases hands] and good for timbling.

    HOPE IT HELPED,

Same questions I had. Since your so young and started out early this gives you an advantage. In high school cheerleading try-outs it's fairly easy. They will normally have 2 days tops of "clinic days" and they will teach you eveything you need to know for try-outs like jumps, cheers, etc. For my school we had to attend at least 1 out if the 2 days they offered clinics I attended both. Then for try-outs we had groups of 3 and we all went in at once. First we did the cheer we learned at the clinic a simple defense cheer. Then we had to perform two jumps and one HAD to be a toe touch. The other was optional. After that we were done. And we could show any extra things we had like splits, tumbling, etc. Good luck! Dont worry! It's two years away. You'll be fine! And I'm sure your mom can be a big help.
