How can I prevent so much water collecting in the bottom of our refrigerator?

I'll bet a quarter inch collects there every day, in a puddle beneath the vegetable crispers. I suppose it must be condensation. We lay a couple of thicknesses of towels in the bottom of the fridge and they get soaked and have to be wrung out every day. Since we're on the Gulf Coast where there is high humidity, maybe it has something to do with that ... but we haven't always had this problem. I tried turning the Cold setting up a couple of notches but it hasn't seemed to help. Any ideas or solutions?

The door isn't sealing properly. Have someone check & service it.

THe other two postings would be correct, except that condensation can only occur in quantity when humid air has the opportunity to enter the fridge. If the door's closed and well-sealed, that won't happen.

As Kmg says: The condensation in the larder area turns to ice on the back of the space.

This then melts, runs down, through a small hole and onto the top of the compressor where it evaporates, the latent heat of evaporation assisting in the cooling process.

If this hole gets blocked, the water cannot run away hence your puddle.

The hole can be found easily, look just above your salad crispers, you'll see a "V" shaped ridge which channels the water to the drain hole, make sure it's clear.

The comment about the door seal, this is always worth checking.

There should be a drain in the bottom of the fridge. This goes to a pan under it, where the water will evaporate. The drain may be stopped up.
