Why do people think breeding a mixed breed dog is good and pay good money for a socalled mutt?

for it but many mix breeds in a shelter is okay to euthanize? Mixed breeds can be very good and many of known breeds were mixed to get a standard but I can't understand today's world of breeding a so called hybrid and calling it a Designer breed for hundreds of dollars.

Well as I found out the people that breed the mix breeds think that if they can come up with a new breed people will buy it.

And yes there are several people out there that are dumber than a box of rocks and go out and pay thousands of dollars for a mutt. My dad to a dog free because someone bought one of these designer dogs and didn't want it anymore. She paid $500 for the dog and gave it up as if it was trash. My dad now is happy with the dog and is trying to train him, the dog is about 1 1/2 years old.

But other than this I really don't know.

james..that is not even true with true hybrids. ligers have various health concerns and neurological deficiency's ask any big cat rescue out there that has taken in a reject hybrid.

mutts are not true hybrids what is a real hybrid? http://s935.photobucket.com/albums/ad191/akita1990...

mutts are simply the random breeding of mixed traits causing NEW genetic defects recessive or otherwise.

my brothers adopted two mutts that might have been considered "designer dogs" both were unstable mentally and did attack them one was put down the other wasnt.

no a "designer mutt" is just a name to blow someones skirt up so they will pay 2 grand for a dog with hidden health concerns.

i know a lawyer that just took a case about 2 women who bought "teacup maltipoos" for 3 thousand because they were told they would not exceed 4 lb's both dogs at half a year are much larger than they were told they would be and they shed constantly and they have a medical bill that most humans cant compete with.

if you wanted to make a new breed a real one look to successful breeds and ask what they did to make a breed and not a mutt.

    1. a set desired phenotype.

    2. a purpose

3.screened all dogs that went into the breeding for health concerns those that didnt meet the desired test results and phenotype were altered so they would not breed.

    4. they did this for years by rewarding the traits they wanted and removing what they didnt from the breeding pool they made a breed of dog for a set purpose.

it is true that most purebred dogs should probably not even be considered purebred due to how badly they deviate from there standard.

for instance if ever there was a black ibizan hound it wouldnt really be an ibizan hound and there have been browns that crop up those are not ibizan hounds because that does not meet ANY standard for the breed and is a DQ thus that is not an ibizan. in the standard there are DQ's and faults, faults meaning not desired in the breed but can still occur and it still be that breed of dog.

the dogo argentino was made from 5 breeds and did as i said .

the person that decided to create the "labradoodle" was simply a imbecile...there were breeds that fit that nich of what he was wanting and he should have bred those and done asthe founders of the dogo argentino did...instead he created an EPIC failure and instead of altering the failed dogs or even adding in another breed to strengthen traits he let people start a fad that has tricked many many people out of thousands and made people suffer the loss of a pet and fill shelters with mutts. i see the designer dog rampage as a major contributor to the dogs in shelters.

I am not sure what is happening to the world these days. People try breeding two random dogs just to get money from them, saying oh they are a rare kind of mixed breed dog. No, there are so many dogs in shelters being euthanized everyday because people are breeding mutts. That's why everyone is trying to stop all these puppy mills and these backyard breeders.

Yes mixed breed dogs are great because they have a better health record, and they live longer, but its just sad to see how many dogs are homeless because people just want to make a few dollars on some puppies. Adopting a puppy or an adult dog from a shelter is amazing, weather its purebred or mixed. You are saving a dogs life, but most people dont do that. People these days are just sick.

I currently have a purebred Great Pyrenees, and a German Shepherd cross puppy. Got them both from a shelter. They are both amazing dogs and i dont know what i would do without them

That's puppy mills taking advantage of the fact that most people don't know better.

Calling something "designer" automatically adds a positive light to the word, whereas "mutt" has negative meaning. It's all just a sales tactic.

As for people paying money instead of adopting? Most people don't actually want a dog, they just want a cute cuddly little puppy. Sad I know.

Other people... like my husband... think adopting a shelter dog means adopting a neurotic animal with pre-existing health issues... >:(

People love their dogs. How else do you think we have so many breeds?

" Mutts" have better genetic survival of species traits, higher natural tolerance and resistance to disease, and more. While I prefer owning " purebred" dogs for monetary value, mutts rule in almost every other aspect.
