Hotels in New Orleans near the French Quarter?

My friend and I are trying to plan a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in 2012, I'm looking online now at hotels in the French Quarter but they are wayy to expensive, can someone tell me some cheap hotels that are like close enough but are cheaper? we're not trying to spend more than 150 a night, but don't want to be too far out. also i'm planning on this being where the biggest party would be, we've never been so any tips would be appreciated!! thanks for any help!!!

    On parade Route:

    Intercontinental New Orleans

    http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/intercontinental/en/g...

    Hilton New Orleans/St. Charles Avenue

Hampton Inn - St. Charles Ave/Garden District

    Royal St Charles Hotel

    Lafayette Hotel

    Close:

Courtyard by Marriott New Orleans Downtown/Convention Center

    Renaissance New Orleans Arts Hotel

You can walk to the quarter from all of them.

If you want super cheap stay in metairie and cab it to the parade route. Remember the parades do not parade in the quarter.

Edit- To the poster who posted Empress Hotel! Seriously! We DO NOT recommend dumps in bad neighborhoods! That is back in the hood of treme. Stay Away. No tourist who doesn't know anything about NOLA should NOT stay there. You must have no idea what you are posting or would not have suggested that!

I just got back from New Orleans 2 weeks ago. We stayed at the Sheraton on Canal Street. We walked to the French Quarter from it everyday we were there. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel to St. Louis Cathedral/Cafe du Monde area of the Quarter, if that helps you any. It was a really nice hotel and we did the Priceline.com name your price thing and got our room for only $90 a night, it's a 4 star hotel so that's not bad. Be forewarned though, you have to pay for their valet service if you bring a car, they just add it onto your bill at the end. We took a cab a couple of times and it only cost us $4-6 each time.

Halloween weekend is a popular time to go. Many (probably most) hotels will have 2-3 night stay minimums. Many hotels have a minimum stay requirement for any weekend, not just special event weekends.. There are lots of FQ hotels with balconies. Were you hoping for a balcony that overlooks Bourbon Street? Or just a balcony overlooking any street in the FQ? For Bourbon Street, it's very pricey and will almost certainly have a 2 night minimum stay on any weekend. Lastly, many hotels are already sold out for Halloween weekend. Of the ones that still have availability, some have higher rates. Pick another weekend, and for your budget you can find a balcony room that is not directly overlooking Bourbon Street.

My answer is not Best Answer material, but this site is capable of helping you.

You'd enter French Quarter destination into the search box and sort by distance, price, etc
