How much do you spend on food shopping per week?

I shop for 4 people and spend between 120/£130 per week.

I need to cut back really so just interested to hear what other people spend :)

The CCCS reccomends a minimum of £30 per adult person per week, so your budget is actually OK, but here are my tips for keeping costs low anyway (My budget is £50 -£60 a week for 2 people, 3 meals a day)

I do what I call a capsule cupboard. The same way you have a capsule wardrobe, where for example a shirt can be worn with your trousers or your skirt and you can dress up the outfit by adding a smart jacket. That jacket can also be worn with the skirt!

A pair of smart jeans, can be dressed up for going out at night, with heels and a top, or dressed down with some boots and a casual top.

So, for the cupboard i try to use ingredients I can split, halve or use in two nights meals. I also add veg to help bulk out the meals as well as being healthy. Below is for 2, so all you would need, is a slightly extra pack of mince. This is also just as basic quick meal as an example:

What I do, is buy a 500g pack of Lean Minced beef. I cook it all up, making spaghetti bolognaise, adding the chopped tomatoes, herbs, red cooking wine, carrots (basic large bag, which is also used for other evening meals) You can also used tinned carrots if that week you don't need carrots for other dishes.

Tinned Mushrooms-Basic. 1onion (from a pack of 3 as the other 2 will be used up in the week)

The 500G mince makes 2 meals for 2 nights and we have large portions as well, so this would do 4 for one night easily.

The onions, other carton of chopped tomatoes will then be used for a home made chicken curry, which again, is split for 2 people for 2 nights dinner. I add in Tinned carrots (or fresh) Peas and some basic potatoes to bulk it out. You don't need that much chicken really, once the veg is in. (I also add half a tin of sweetcorn, as the other half was for my Tuna Salad earlier in the week for lunch) I like to buy decent chicken, but can't do that every week, so I get 3 -4 basic chicken breasts for about £4 or look for special offers. (so far that's 4 nights meals) I have to say, although we are always told the bogofs create food waste, if your on a budget, they are a godsend, especially on meat and veg and if you have a family! I try to do recipes that require the same or almost the same ingredients. I have tons of recipe books, but you always find you need to go and buy something special or that someone doesn't eat in the household.

Another example would be: Base recipe = chicken. I do Chicken Fajitas and chicken kebabs! Both need onions, both need mixed peppers. I just buy basic salsa and low fat fajitas and already have the rice in from cooking the curry! Do you see?

Apart from cutting back or going to own brand or basics, the best way really is to find meals that can use the same ingredients or similar. A typical winter week for us is this:

    Sunday: Roast,veg and potatoes

Monday: Left over Roast, fresh veg and potatoes

Tues: Chicken and potato curry and rice

Wed: Chicken curry and rice or maybe for a change, naan bread.

    Thurs: Shepherds pie and veg

    Friday: Shepherds pie and veg

Saturday: (That's always a late night so I do get us Sainsbury's Pizza's!)

I will then change the week around and do chicken stir fry instead of the curry etc etc

I also look online for deals and actually shop in different shops to get each chunk of my food list (toilet roll from Wilkinson, fresh fruit and veg from either the market or sainsburys basic)

Hope that helps! Check out moneysavingexpert.co.uk for tips!

Source(s): Oh one more thing, DON'T buy ready made sauces if you can help it! They are more expensive, don't go as far and full of crap anyway. It's not that much quicker than just adding all the bits yourself. Just make sure you have standard cupboard items, like cooking wines, herbs, curry pastes and herbs (don't need too many, again, many herbs and spices can be used for other meals, so look for recipes that can use all or most of what you have) I keep my cupboard stocked with basics and with tinned items as well, just in case, they keep well, and are quick and easy if you have a late night!

I shop for six people, some of them little and still using nappies, and my total weekly bill for food and cleaning stuff, washing powder, nappies etc can be as high as £200.

I do all my cooking from scratch and I still can't get it down any lower. I could stop buying things like meat and fish and have more stuff like beans on toast, but I haven't quite got to the stage where I'm willing to do that. The problem with having children is that you have to make proper meals, you can't just decide to have Alpen for tea or something like that.

The bill has been steadily going up. I read somewhere that some items have gone up by 40 to 60 % in the last couple of years. Certainly a lot of things have gone up by 10%, whereas my husband's and my wages have not. My husband actually does the shopping on his way home from work. He pays the supermarket bills and I pay everything else. We earn about the same, that shows how bad it has got.

I read that in many cases small local shops are actually cheaper than supermarkets now, so we may check them out. I would much rather that our business went to them rather than supermarkets, but they are usually closed when we want to shop.

I have always been able to feed just myself on £20 or less, though lately I find it is closer to £25. That would be £50 for two people. I use the leftovers today as the starting point of something else tomorrow, and hate to have waste. I find if I buy what I estimate is enough for 4 days, it lasts most of the week. If I buy any more, some always ends up thrown out or gone off.

I live in england and spend around £100 per week for four people, 2 adults, 2 teenagers. But this is basically just 6 meals for the week and then on the last night we get a takeaway or eat out

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular “fad” diets out there. Go here https://tr.im/ag8VK

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it’s just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it’s a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true
