Lumps in breastmilk causing pain?

Ive been breastfeeding my son for 15 weeks. For the past few weeks I've been getting excruciating sharp stabbing pains deep in my left breast for a few hours after feeding. Some days it will be after each feed, other days there will be no pain at all. Occasionally my nipple really stings too when touched, as if being poked by a needle. However if i feed again from that side, the pain in the nipple goes!

I was treated for thrush with cream and a tablet, and little one was given mouth drops, however i don't think it ever was thrush.

When I express I sometimes get lumps in the milk, like fat that has clumped up. I have no idea what this is. But I'm wondering if this could be causing the pain. The lumps travelling toward the nipple and getting lodged somewhere, and being released by the next feed? I have no idea really, its just a theory.

Any advice or experience would be helpful, I will be seeing my health visitor at the weighing clinic tomorrow but in the meantime....

Sounds like a clogged duct which is normal. Sometimes your milk ducts can get clogged and you will see a little knot or lump usually in the areola near the nipple. Try nursing from the breast with the clogged more often untill it goes away. To prevent clogged ducts try not to let your breast remain full for to long by nursing or pumping regularly and using warm compresses after nursing.

Be sure to address this b/c clogged ducts can lead to an infection thats called mastitis

It is possible to get a clog in the duct, but your symptoms are consistent with thrush. The stabbing pain deep in the breast and the nipple sensitivity are both signs that perhaps your thrush did not resolve. I don't know why you thought there was no thrush, but these are common symptoms. You may want to go and get checked out again, and get your baby checked out. Thrush can sometimes be very subtle and you don't see the classic white tongue. My baby had thrush and I was having pain for weeks before it became apparent what it was. Treatment made everything go away.

Sounds like it could be a blocked milk duct. I had this, which in my case led to mastitis several times. Expressing made the pain worse and feeding relieved it. One doctor I went to see told me it was thrush, another said mastitis. Antibiotics worked miracles. Mention it to your health visitor. In the meantime I am afraid there is little you can do. A warm bath/compress can help ease it a bit. I would definitely say keep feeding as normal until you have been to clinic.

I'm young, so I wouldn't know, but have you considered a false pregnancy? I had a horse once who started getting really oily and excreting an almost breastmilk-like substance from her tetes because of a false pregnancy. It was more watered down that normal horse breastmilk though, much like how it gets when they're pregnant a few weeks before birth, right before the wax turns into normal milk. I wish I could help more, good luck!

it sounds like the lumps might be causing the pain, i know that my mom got a breast infection when i was a baby and she was breastfeeding me so that might be what you have. but it's safe to still breastfeed while you have an infection, it doesn't harm the baby and helps clear the infection faster. i'm not a doctor though so i could be totally wrong. i just know of this and thought i'd let you know. hopefully everything goes well at the clinic tomorrow and you can get this cleared up! :)
