My best guy friend graduated this year and my friend and I (we're both his best friends) bought fabric markers and paint and white pillowcases and pillows. Then we decorated one side of the pillowcases with his name in the colors of the college he's going to and at his graduation party we had all of his relatives write messages on the back with the markers. Then we put them in a little bag and when he pulled them out we whacked him with the pillows, just for laughs. He really liked them and the notes from us and his family meant a lot.
So, for the track team, maybe you could do one pillowcase per person, and maybe you don't have to even buy the pillows. You could get the pillowcases custom made with each persons name embroidered or printed on one side, then buy 2-3 packs of fabric markers and let everyone sign them. I guess this is similar to yearbooks, but it's useful and the personalization is nice. You could even put their name and then the schools name and "track" on it.
If that idea doesn't go through... =/ Then try high school memorabilia or photos or food.
I still like the pillow case idea though =]
