Digital watermarking for pro photos?
I am going to sell my photos on smugmug. I definitely want some sort of digital watermark in them so I don't have to put a distracting, visible watermark in. I've done some research but now need to hear experience.
Seems like Digimark may be the best choice? I like that they can track if my photo is being used on a web site.
I'm trying to do it cheap if there may be another service that does just as good a job. I will pay the Digimark pro price of $99 if I have to.

You can track your own on tineye.com
Digimark is great, but not necessary.
Make sure you include your information in your metadata and that you are putting your copyright information in the metadata.
Make sure you are registering your copyright every 3 months with the copyright office-you own the copyright from the moment it clicks, however if you do not register it you are very limited in what you can recover in damages. It's only $45 and you can size them down to a thumbnail and put HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS on one disk. Just do it. You may never need it, but then again!! I know SEVERAL professionals who have found their work being used by another "pro" claiming them as their own. I know of one pro who did a commercial shoot with a contract and specific use terms in that contract... The business violated those terms VERY blatantly and told her point blank they would run her in to the ground if she pursued it. She did not register her copyright. She cannot afford to fight it because the remuneration is far less than the cost of the attorney needed.
Off my soap box! LOL!

This is only part of the problem. Digimark will help you identify theft, but do you register the copyright on your images with copyright.gov? If not, you really do not have a lot of legal recourse.
You might want to look at ImageRights: https://www.imagerights.com/ For $595/yr they will handle your copyright filings, look for piracy, and take legal action against copyright infringes on your behalf for a portion of the settlements.
